Kurzweil’s words imply an inevitable and rapid acceleration from Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) to Artificial Superintelligence (ASI), with little time in between. However, if we assume a highly optimized AGI operating in a flawless computational environment, this remains theoretically possible.
Scenario 2: Transition in 5 Seconds

In this scenario, the AGI takes five seconds to advance from human-level intelligence to superintelligence. This timeframe allows slightly more breathing room for recursive self-improvement while remaining exceptionally fast.
What Would Happen in Five Seconds?

A five-minute transition is one of the most likely scenarios, allowing sufficient time for exponential acceleration to take full effect. During this period, the AGI would likely iterate through hundreds or even thousands of self-improvement cycles.
